A man is dead and a teen boy is recovering in hospital after a shooting at a home on Bannatyne Avenue Sunday evening.

The victims were found with gunshot wounds after Winnipeg police raced to 599 Bannatyne Ave., a two-suite rental house between Lydia and Furby streets, at about 8:40 p.m.

The man died at the scene, police said, marking the 32nd homicide in the city this year.

The boy, who police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen described as a teenager, was rushed to hospital in stable condition, where he remains.

Police have not yet released the name of the dead man, as homicide detectives were still in the process of identifying him and notifying his next of kin Monday, Michalyshen said.

Detectives have not yet announced any arrests or whether any suspects in the shooting have been identified.

On Monday morning, Winnipeg Police Service forensics investigators and a medical examiner entered and exited from the house’s front door, where a stretcher sat on the sidewalk.

The house and the one immediately adjacent were cordoned off with yellow crime-scene tape, while forensics officers placed evidence markers on the parking pad at the rear of the house and on its exterior back stair.

Neighbours who heard the barrage ring out in quick succession had been listening to the echoing bangs of fireworks, as revellers were celebrating Diwali — the Hindu festival of lights often marked with fireworks — Sunday evening.

Then a series of much louder gunshots rang out, startling a nearby resident, her husband and children.

“Just rapid gunfire,” said the 51 year old, who requested anonymity out of fear of reprisal.

“It just really scared us, it was that loud… we were sitting there just trying to figure out what those sounds were in the distance, then all of a sudden it was right in our ears.”

The resident said she was not surprised that there was a shooting at the house, which she said was home to frequent illicit activity, including apparent drug trafficking.

Another neighbour heard a series of popping sounds he assumed were firecrackers.

“My daughter came down and said: ‘There’s police everywhere,’” the 60-year-old said. “I’m moving out of this city. There’s too much of that, meth everywhere.”

The double shooting on Sunday was the second homicide over the weekend in Winnipeg. Saturday at about 2 a.m., Winnipeg police found a man injured on the sidewalk of Arlington Street near Logan Avenue, where officers gave him first aid before he died. The man’s age and name have not been released.

Michalyshen said detectives expect to make more information public about the Arlington slaying today.
