Southdale elementary school evacuated, classes cancelled due to fire
1:38 PM
About 450 students and staff members evacuated a Southdale elementary school after a fire broke out Monday.
City firefighters were sent to École Guyot, a Grade 1-8 immersion school on Willowlake Crescent, at 11:20 a.m., after the building’s fire alarm went off.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said crews could see smoke and flames coming from the gymnasium roof. Crews declared the fire under control at 12:39 p.m.
“The preliminary investigation suggests the fire was accidental, caused when a heat system on the roof malfunctioned,” the WFPS said in a news release. “Damage was mostly confined to the gymnasium area of the school.”
Emmalee Blackadar, communications director for the Louis Riel School Division, said students were transported via school bus to LRSD headquarters. Afternoon classes were cancelled.
Blackadar said the division will provide more details to families about damages and a return to school when they become available.
