Interim Manitoba Liberal leader and the party’s lone MLA in the legislature Cindy Lamoureux announced today that Willard Reaves is now the party’s deputy leader.

Reaves ran unsuccessfully twice for the Manitoba Liberals in Fort Whyte. In 2022, Reaves came within 200 votes of winning a byelection that saw Progressive Conservative candidate Obby Khan take the PC stronghold vacated by former premier Brian Pallister.

In the 2023 election, the incumbent Khan won with 1,229 more votes than Reaves.

The party lost two of its three seats in the Manitoba legislature in the Oct. 3 election, including that of Dougald Lamont (St. Boniface), who immediately resigned as leader, and Jon Gerrard, the longtime MLA for River Heights. Lamont’s and Gerrard’s seats both went to the NDP who won the election and formed a majority government.

Lamoureux also announced two new co-chairs to serve on the provincial party’s election readiness committee: her father and Liberal MP for Winnipeg North, Kevin Lamoureux, and David Johnson.

“I believe in being prepared and this means that if a byelection were to be called at any point in time, we will be ready,” the MLA for Tyndall Park said in a press release.
