Arrest in grocery store stabbing

11:38 AM

City police have arrested a suspect wanted after a stabbing at a grocery store last week.

An employee was stabbed at the No Frills on Notre Dame Avenue on Wednesday night, and police later released a security image of a suspect.

A suspect was arrested in the 600 block of William Avenue on Friday night and “released on an undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.”

The Winnipeg Police Service said Monday investigators linked the stabbing suspect to another violent commercial robbery at a store in the 300 block of Donald Street on Nov. 19. A suspect, along with an unidentified male, were armed with a hammer and an axe.

A 28-year-old security guard who tried to intervene was assaulted and robbed of his phone. The victim was not hurt, the WPS said.

The suspects fled on foot with some stolen merchandise before police arrived.

The same suspect arrested Friday was re-arrested in the same place Saturday night and remains in custody.

Jayden Smith, 18, is facing five charges.
