Police officers did not contribute to serious McPhillips collision: IIU

3:25 PM

Winnipeg police officers who were following a vehicle after an attempted traffic stop did not contribute to a subsequent serious collision at McPhillips Street and Leila Avenue last March, says the province’s police watchdog.

Winnipeg police notified the Independent Investigation Unit of the March 4, 2023 collision that hospitalized two people the next day.

The IIU says officers had been called to a domestic assault near Powers Street and Selkirk Avenue, but a man got into an SUV and sped off. Police tried to stop him, but he kept driving at a high speed. The police helicopter followed the vehicle and advised officers on the ground about its location, the IIU says.

The SUV then ran a red light at the intersection and hit another vehicle. Both drivers were hospitalized with serious injuries.

The IIU says after it has closed its probe into the incident, after conducting interviews and reviewing information, including video footage.
