Jets lose 1-0 in overtime to Maple Leafs
8:51 PM
The NHL’s leading goal scorer, Auston Matthews, ripped his 39th of the year as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Winnipeg Jets 1-0 in overtime on Wednesday night.
Ilya Samsonov stopped all 32 shots he faced for the shutout, while Laurent Brossoit made 29 saves in a hard-luck loss.
Winnipeg is now 30-11-5 on the year, including 1-1-1 on this three-game road trip. Toronto improves to 24-14-8.
The Jets were without top forwards Mark Scheifele and Gabe Vilardi due to injury, then lost defenceman Josh Morrissey to a lower-body ailment late in the first period.
Winnipeg went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Toronto went 0-for-5.
The Jets return to action on Saturday night when they host the Maple Leafs in a rematch.
Big police presence in River Park South
12:50 PM
A large police presence was seen at a condominium complex in River Park South on Wednesday morning.
Police in marked and unmarked vehicles arrived at the complex on St. Anne’s Road, just north of Aldgate Road, at about 6 a.m., an area resident said.
A spokeswoman for the Winnipeg Police Service described the incident as a “police-initiated call.” She said more information will be released at a later date.
Shots fired on Furby Street, no one hurt
12:38 PM
Winnipeg police are investigating after shots were fired on Furby Street early Wednesday morning.
Winnipeg Police Service patrol officers were called to the 500 block of Furby Street at about 1:45 a.m., after receiving multiple calls about the sound of gunshots in the area, police said.
Officers found damaged property and evidence a gun had been fired, but no one was hurt.
Major crimes detectives have taken over the investigation, but have not yet made any arrests.
Investigators ask anyone with information to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.
Man slain in Birdtail Sioux First Nation
12:19 PM
RCMP and local police are probing the death of a 40-year-old man from Birdtail Sioux First Nation as a homicide.
Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers found the man, whose name was not released, dead at about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday in a home in the community, about 60 kilometers north of Virden.
Police were called to the home about an injured man. Officers later called in RCMP major crimes investigators for assistance.
RCMP have asked anyone with information about the slaying to call First Nations police at 204-568-4539 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
City seeking input on cycling routes
12:03 PM
Winnipeggers can now weigh on two potential bike routes, as part of a vision to revitalize downtown.
The city has launched a survey to gather feedback on the alignments for cycling routes along St. Mary Avenue and York Avenue, as well as Notre Dame Avenue and Cumberland Avenue. The routes are part of CentrePlan 2050, a long-term strategy that aims to attract more residents and visitors to the city centre.
Potential alignments are now posted online.
Residents can also register to attend a virtual Zoom event from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 7.
More information on the online survey and virtual event is available at http://wfp.to/jcd.
The survey will remain open until Feb. 16.
Suspect arrested in St. James slaying
10:00 AM
A second man has been arrested after two men were shot — one fatally — in St. James in November.
Winnipeg police said Wednesday that Bryce William Walker, 21, was arrested inside a home in Thompson by a team of Winnipeg police and RCMP officers, including members of the joint specialized Manitoba Integrated Violent Offender Apprehension Unit, on Tuesday.
Walker, who was being sought under a Canada-wide warrant, has been charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder. He has been detained in custody.
Lawrence Evan Pruden was out celebrating his 27th birthday with a friend when he was fatally shot in the passenger seat of a car near Portage Avenue and Parkview Street at about 1 a.m. on Nov. 5.
A witness said at the time that she saw the passenger window had been “blown out” and she used the airbag to apply pressure to Pruden’s head.
A 30-year-old man who was with Pruden and was also shot was rushed to hospital in critical condition. He was later upgraded to stable.
Nathaniel Gatehouse-Gilchrist, 23, was arrested last month and charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.
Police said no further arrests are expected.
