Moose triumph at long last

The Manitoba Moose finally have a win in 2024.

The American Hockey League team snapped an 11-game losing streak Saturday night in Rockford, Ill., with a 5-3 victory over the IceHogs.

Manitoba hadn’t won since Dec. 23.

Parker Ford had a goal and an assist for the Moose, now 13-23-1-0. Kyle Capobianco had three assists.

The Moose play the host Chicago Wolves on Sunday afternoon.

Jets downed 4-2 by Maple Leafs

The Winnipeg Jets fell 4-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night at Canada Life Centre.

Dylan Samberg opened the scoring for Winnipeg, but the visitors replied with four straight goals to skate away with the victory. Mason Appleton added a late tally in the dying seconds.

Winnipeg went 0-for-4 on the power play, while Toronto went 2-for-3.

The Jets have now lost three straight games (0-2-1) and are 30-12-5 on the season. The Maple Leafs improve to 25-14-8.

Winnipeg is now off until Feb. 6 due to the player and All-Star break.

Crowd gathers, calls for justice in Nigerian student death

More than 100 people gathered downtown Saturday, calling for justice for a Nigerian student fatally shot by police.

This will likely be the first of many rallies, one organizer said.

Afolabi Stephen Opaso died after police responded to a well-being call on New Year’s Eve.

Pro-Palestinian group holds rally at CMHR

More than 60 people gathered outside the Canadian Museum for Human Rights Saturday afternoon calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The rally is the latest in a number held by the Canadian Palestinian Association of Manitoba.

Protestors held signs bearing faces of local Liberal MPs and the words “support a ceasefire now.”

The rally was held on International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Police were stationed nearby.

Fire on Logan Avenue leads to emergency demolition

A building on Logan Avenue partially collapsed from a fire Saturday morning, leading to the arrangement of an emergency demolition.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews will stay at the commercial/industrial building at the corner of Logan and Princess Street Saturday afternoon to put out hotspots, a City of Winnipeg release states.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at 6:48 a.m. Saturday. It was declared under control roughly three hours later, at 9:03 a.m.

No injuries were reported, and the fire in under investigation. Damage estimates weren’t available late Saturday morning.

Crews blocked off roads nearby during the fire and asked residents to stay indoors as smoke lingered with morning fog.

Fire burns in Logan Avenue building, closes nearby roads

Roads are closed near the intersection of Logan Avenue and Princess Street as a fire burns in a commercial/industrial building.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service has responded and will be on site into the afternoon, the City of Winnipeg wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The City is warning people to avoid the area. Residents nearby should stay indoors, especially if they have respiratory conditions, as smoke from the fire lingers with the morning’s fog, the City advised. The fire is creating smoky conditions in the surrounding area.
