CITY Homicide victim identified
POLICE have identified Winnipeg’s latest homicide victim. On Feb. 3 at about 3:15 a.m., 43-year-old Charles Danny Chartrand of Winnipeg, was found unresponsive at a residence in the 200 block of Fountain Street. He later died in hospital and his death is being investigated by the Winnipeg Police Service homicide unit.
On Monday, police issued a news release stating they’ve notified Chartrand’s family of his death. Investigators are asking anyone with video surveillance or information to call the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508, Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477, or leave a tip online at winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
Senior arrested after bank robbed
A senior is in custody after holding up a bank in the Regent area Friday afternoon.
Winnipeg police say just before 1:30 p.m. officers responded to a bank in the 1500 block of Regent Avenue West with reports a robbery had occurred.
Officers were told a lone suspect gave a note to a teller indicating he was armed — though no weapon was seen by witnesses — and demanded cash, police said in a news release Monday.
The suspect made away with $10,000 and fled in an unknown direction, the release said.
After identifying a suspect, investigators from the major crimes unit descended on a hotel room in the 300 block of Waterfront Drive on Sunday and arrested a 65-year-old man. A search of the room yielded some of the stolen money.
The man was charged with robbery and remains in custody.
Vacant home burns again
FOR the second time in three months, firefighters responded to a fire inside a vacant home on Logan Avenue.
Crews found no occupants and there were no injuries reported following the blaze inside the bungalow in the 700 block of Logan Avenue. The fire was reported at about 3:45 p.m. on Feb. 4. Smoke was coming from the house when crews arrived, and they had the fire under control within half an hour.
An increase in the number of properties sitting vacant in the city has led to a rise in fires within vacant buildings. There were nearly 150 fires in vacant buildings over the past year and United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg president Tom Bilous has called it “the winter from hell” for vacant building fires.
The same property on Logan Avenue was previously damaged in a fire in November, according to a news release Monday from the City of Winnipeg.
