Jets winless streak hits 5 games with 4-1 loss in Philadelphia

9:06 PM

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Winnipeg Jets.

The struggling squad lost 4-1 to the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night. They have now gone winless in five games (0-4-1) to fall to 30-14-5 overall.

The Flyers erupted for three goals in the first period, then added a shorthanded tally early in the middle frame to put this one to bed. Kyle Connor, with his team-leading 19th, scored the only goal for Winnipeg in the third period.

The Jets return to action on Saturday night when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins at Canada Life Centre.

One person sustained minor injuries in a collision between a school bus and a car Thursday afternoon.

St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP responded to the crash on Highway 59 north of Ile des Chenes around 4 p.m. None of the nine students on the bus nor the driver were injured, RCMP said in an email.

The driver of the car was sent to hospital with minor injuries.

Winter storm sparks power outages

4:41 PM

A dump of snow, sleet and rain has cut power to about 6,000 Manitoba Hydro customers in the southern part of the province.

Manitoba Hydro said ice has built up on electrical lines and resulted in isolated outages.

In Winnipeg, 250 customers are affected while most outages are in rural areas.

The utility couldn’t say when power will be restored.

Two boys arrested for threatening schools

4:18 PM

Two 12-year-old boys have been arrested after allegedly making threats against their schools in western Manitoba.

RCMP responded to two separate reports Tuesday of youths uttering threats at schools in the rural municipalities of Alonsa and Portage la Prairie, Mounties said in a news release Thursday. They did not release the names of the schools.

In the first incident, it was reported a youth had threatened to bring a gun to school, RCMP said. The youth was detained and no firearm was located. Further investigation determined the boy had assaulted two youths earlier in the day and also uttered threats, Mounties said.

A 12-year-old boy is facing charges of assault and uttering threats.

In the second case, it was reported that a youth had made threats towards students at his school, RCMP said.

A 12-year-old male was located at his residence and arrested, and is facing a charge of uttering threats.

Both youths were released from custody.

“Every time a threat is made at a school we respond immediately and investigate thoroughly as these cases are not taken lightly,” said Cpl. Julie Courchaine of the Manitoba RCMP. “It’s important for parents and guardians to sit down with their children and talk about the seriousness of making threats in person or online as their actions can lead to criminal charges.”

Injured cyclist upgraded to stable condition

11:42 AM

An elderly cyclist who was critically injured after being struck by a motorist earlier this week has been upgraded to stable condition, police confirmed Thursday.

The crash happened on Pembina Highway near Daly Street at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The Winnipeg Police Service previously said the 83-year-old male cyclist was crossing Pembina when a driver traveling southbound in a Chevrolet Colorado hit him. The motorist remained on scene and spoke with police.

The WPS did not provide further updates into the investigation.

Anyone with dash camera footage of the incident is asked to contact investigators at 204-986-7085 or contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 204-786-8477 or online at winnipegcrimestoppers.org.

Pair of men accused of assaulting off-duty Mountie outside Winnipeg school

11:28 AM

Two men are facing charges for allegedly assaulting an off-duty RCMP officer outside of a Winnipeg school on Tuesday afternoon.

Winnipeg police say the Mountie had spotted two men “creating a disturbance” in a vehicle outside an elementary on Buchanan Boulevard during school dismissal and went over to tell them to leave.

The two men, city police say, got out of the vehicle and threatened the RCMP officer while assaulting him.

City police arrived at about 3:10 p.m. and arrested two men, 39 and 44, who are facing a raft of charges, including assaulting a peace officer. One was charged with impaired driving offences.

Both were released on undertakings.
