Jets beat Sharks 1-0

9:08 PM

The Winnipeg Jets beat the San Jose Sharks 1-0 on Wednesday night at Canada Life Centre.

Morgan Barron’s first period goal was all the offence in this one.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped all 18 shots he faced for his third shutout of the season. Kaapo Kahkonen was much busier in the San Jose net, making 39 saves.

Winnipeg improves to 32-14-5. San Jose falls to 14-33-5.

The Jets now head out on the road for two games starting Saturday in Vancouver against the Canucks.

Witness to fatal encounter with police sought

2:26 PM

Manitoba’s police watchdog is seeking to identify a witness to a man’s struggle with police as part of its investigation into the man’s death.

Elias Whitehead, 37, went into medical distress in the 200 block of Sherbrook Street on Oct. 15 and died in hospital.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba on Wednesday released images from video evidence of a man who witnessed the struggle.

“Efforts to identify this individual have been unsuccessful,” the IIU said in a news release.

Anyone who knows the identity of the witness is asked to call the IIU at 204-948-7000 or toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.

Bus passenger stabbed amid racial slurs

1:53 PM

A bus passenger was rushed to hospital in critical condition after he was stabbed by another man who had uttered racial slurs toward him.

The Winnipeg Police Service was sent to the Osborne Street transit station at about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers provided emergency medical care to a man in his 20s, including using a chest seal. He was transported to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable.

“The initial stages of the investigation indicated that amid racial slurs from another male on the bus, the victim was threatened and physically assaulted,” the WPS said Wednesday.

The bus was stopped, and both males got out. Police were contacted, and the suspect fled.

The suspect is described as a white man, 20 to 30 years old, with a slim build.

The WPS major crimes unit is asking anyone with information about the incident to call investigators at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Police to speak on ‘officer-involved incident’

9:53 AM

City police will hold a news conference Wednesday morning regarding an “officer-involved incident.”

The Winnipeg Police Service often uses that term to describe incidents where a person is injured or killed in encounters with police.

WPS Chief Danny Smyth has held several news conferences on such incidents in recent months. Acting WPS Chief Art Stannard will be at Wednesday’s news conference.
