Connor delivers another OT winners as Jets defeat Coyotes 4-3

Kyle Connor delivered his second overtime winner in as many games as the Winnipeg Jets wrapped up a 4-3 overtime victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday at Canada Life Centre.

The Jets built a 3-1 cushion on an even-strength marker from Mark Scheifele and power-play goals from Connor and Gabriel Vilardi.

But the Coyotes rallied with a goal from Matias Maccelli in the second period and a second of the game from Schmaltz 64 seconds into the third period to send the game to overtime.

It was an excellent effort for Scheifele as he had a goal and three assists, while Connor had two goals, Vilardi had a goal and an assist and Josh Morrissey had three helpers, including a perfect pass on the game-winner.

Connor Hellebuyck finished with 29 saves in his 42nd start of the season.

The Jets, who improved to 36-15-5, are back in action on Tuesday against the St. Louis Blues.

Jones beats Cameron 12-7, advances to Scotties final

CALGARY — Jennifer Jones is off to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts final.

Jones defeated fellow Manitoban Kate Cameron 12-7 in Sunday afternoon’s semifinal at the WinSport Event Centre in Calgary. Jones controlled the game from the start as she opened with five in the first end.

She will now play Ontario’s Rachel Homan tonight at 7 p.m. CT for gold.

No one hurt in Westwood fire

Fire crews spent the early hours of Sunday battling a house fire on Galinee Bay in Winnipeg.

Firefighters responded to reports of a fire at a bi-level home around 12:18 a.m. and found smoke and flames coming from the house. The fire was under control an hour later.

All occupants got out safely and no one was hurt, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release Sunday.

Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by overheated electrical equipment.

Winnipeg man charged with impaired driving after incident near WPS headquarters

A Winnipeg man is facing impaired driving charges after he allegedly drove a truck onto the sidewalk near the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m., when city police watched a motorist drive a white, 1998 Ford Ranger truck onto the east sidewalk near 245 Smith Street and stop outside the building’s public entrance, the WPS said in a release.

Multiple police units, including members of the tactical support team, closed sections of Smith Street and Graham Avenue before attending to the vehicle, which was driven by a man.

According to the release, the suspect repeatedly refused to exit the truck, at one point arming himself with a screwdriver. Police breached the vehicle’s windows and shocked the man with Tasers before arresting him.

Police said he was then transported to the hospital in stable condition. The building was not damaged, and no additional injuries were reported.

Investigators learned the 48-year-old suspect already had an outstanding warrant in his name. He remains in custody and is now also facing charges related to impaired driving, police said.
