Arrests made in retail thefts crackdown

12:47 PM

Winnipeg police continued a crackdown on retail thefts Wednesday, arresting six adults for stealing merchandise at the Superstore on Sargent Avenue.

All of the stolen property was recovered, the Winnipeg Police Service said Thursday. Two of the six suspects were found to have outstanding warrants for arrest.

Police estimated the stolen goods were worth more than $23,000.

The WPS, prompted by a reported increase in thefts and violence against store workers and shoppers, announced an effort to target serial shoplifters in November.

“The success of a retail theft initiative is dependent on effective collaboration between various stakeholders and a multifaceted approach that addresses the root causes of theft. The aim is to raise awareness, deter potential offenders, and promote a safe and secure shopping environment,” a news release stated.

“We remain committed to working with our community partners and social service providers to ensure support is available to individuals facing various challenges such as food insecurity, poverty, or addiction.”

Police told reporters on Dec. 4 that property-crime investigators had made 151 arrests since Nov. 1. On Dec. 21, the WPS said 132 theft-related arrests had been made in December.

The WPS did not have updated arrest numbers Thursday.

Man seriously hurt in machete attack

10:53 AM

A man remains in hospital with “life-altering injuries” after he was attacked with machetes at an apartment building next to a Flin Flon school.

RCMP were sent to the building on Aspen Grove at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The school used “hold and secure” protocols as a precaution.

Police found a 19-year-old man from Moose Lake who was suffering serious injuries. Officers administered first aid until emergency medical crews arrived. The victim was transported to Winnipeg hospital, where he remained Thursday.

RCMP said a fight had broken out between the victim and two males who also live in the apartment building. The two males attacked the victim with machetes, Mounties said.

A 19-year-old man and a 13-year-old-boy, both from The Pas, were arrested and charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The man was also charged with five counts of failing to comply with a release order, while the boy was charged with one count of failing to comply with an undertaking.

The man arrested was taken to hospital for treatment of a minor injury suffered during the fight before being taken to the RCMP detachment.

Both males remained in custody Thursday.

Province announces bail-reform plan

10:36 AM

The Manitoba government announced a five-point plan Thursday to strengthen the province’s bail system.

The plan includes bolstering Crown bail policies, investing in law enforcement resources, more than $500,000 to expand capabilities to gather and share data, another $500,000 to enhance community monitoring and supervision, and holding a public safety summit.

“Manitobans in every part of our province deserve to feel safe in their community,” Premier Kinew said in a news release handed out at a morning news conference.

“We know when repeat offenders are released back onto our streets, it impacts not just the victims of a crime, but everyone in the community. We also know that serious offenders on bail are more likely to reoffend without the support they need to make better choices. That is why we are taking action that is tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime.
