A 34-year-old Ontario man has been charged with human smuggling after a recent traffic stop in Morden.
Just before midnight March 11, a Morden Police Service officer pulled over the driver of a vehicle with five passengers dressed for the cold, Mounties said in a news release Monday.
RCMP said their investigation determined the passengers — four in their 20s and one who is 58 — were going to attempt to enter the United States.
Two of the passengers had status in Canada, while three were turned over to the Canada Border Services Agency.
Jose Pablo Hilario Pimentel faces human smuggling and counselling misrepresentation charges under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. He remains in custody.
The incident is the latest alleged human smuggling attempt in Manitoba.
Last month, RCMP officers pulled over a Winnipeg man on McGillivray Boulevard, charging him with human smuggling after finding eight passengers from Africa (seven from Chad, one from Mali) in his vehicle. Abdi Hassan Ali, 30, faces charges.
