Playoffs on the line for Carman’s Hayward rink

6:24 PM

Shaela Hayward and her Carman teammates have a big morning ahead of them Saturday.

The team, listed as Manitoba No. 1, takes its 5-2 record into a pivotal matchup with Nova Scotia No. 1 (7-0) in its final round-robin game at the Canadian U21 Women’s Curling Championship in Fort McMurray, Alta.

Hayward is tied with three other teams in second spot at 5-2. Only the top three teams in each pool advance to the playoffs.

Zoey Terrick’s Winnipeg crew, listed as Manitoba No. 2, is 1-6 and won’t advance.

In U21 men’s play, Jordan McDonald of Winnipeg (Manitoba No. 1) took a perfect 7-0 Pool A record into Friday’s late draw against also-unbeaten Saskatchewan No. 2. Regardless of the outcome, the Assiniboine Memorial squad will make the playoffs.

In Pool B, Virden’s Jace Freeman, 6-2 and in second place, was idle Friday night but will also advance to the weekend playoffs.

Vilardi returns to Jets lineup Saturday

2:10 PM

The Winnipeg Jets are getting a big boost as they head down the home stretch of the regular season.

Forward Gabe Vilardi returns to the lineup on Saturday night against the Ottawa Senators at Canada Life Centre. He’s missed the last 15 games with an undisclosed upper-body injury and an enlarged spleen that was discovered during medical testing.

He also missed 20 other games earlier this year with two other injuries.

Vilardi has been very productive when in the lineup, with 16 goals and 14 assists in 38 games. He was a full participant at Friday’s practice and will be on the top line with Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor.

Winnipeg is 44-23-6 on the year, but 0-4-1 in the last five games. They have nine games remaining before the playoffs begin on Apr. 20.
