Liberal candidate for Riding Mountain announced
The Liberal party’s candidate for the Riding Mountain riding is Terry Hayward, a substitute teacher from rural Manitoba who worked in agriculture with the federal government for more than three decades.
Hayward, who grew up in Brandon, is the Manitoba Election Readiness chair for the federal Liberals.
He told the Brandon Sun that as an MP, he would bring his relationships with ministers to the job and would ensure the voices of his constituents are heard.
He’ll try to take down Conservative incumbent Dan Mazier. The NDP and Green party told the Sun they had yet to name candidates Thursday.
The riding includes Virden, Minnedosa and Shoal Lake.
NDP candidate promises ‘punk rock campaign’
Jorge Requena Ramos, the artistic director of the West End Cultural Centre and leader of Winnipeg rock group Mariachi Ghost, is the federal NDP candidate for Winnipeg South Centre.
“I’m not here to do politics. I’m here to speak truth to power as I have all my life,” he said in an email to media Friday. “I’m calling this a ‘punk rock campaign.’ I’m expecting it to be fun, even in these ridiculous times.”
Ramos said his platform includes policies on affordability, climate change, Indigenous rights and reconciliation and poverty and crime.
He is fighting against incumbent Liberal Ben Carr and Conservative candidate Royden Brousseau.
Poilievre to hold Winnipeg rally
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will hold a news conference and rally in Winnipeg on Saturday.
He will be the first federal leader to make a stop in Manitoba since the election campaign began Sunday.
The rally is scheduled to begin at a location on Wellington Avenue at 3:30 p.m.
