BRANDON — The Brandon jail has launched an internal review after a correctional officer was stabbed twice in the back Monday evening.

Brandon police say the 47-year-old male was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Brandon Police Service is deeply concerned for the well-being of the staff member injured in the recent incident,” BPS said in a news release Tuesday. “Our thoughts are with the individual and his family.”

A 41-year-old male inmate is facing charges of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, aggravated assault of a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on May 12.

“Brandon Correctional Centre is working closely with law enforcement and an internal review to examine the circumstances and reinforce safety measures for both staff and inmates has been launched,” police said.

Last year, two inmates were beaten to death. On Dec. 29, 2024, a 23-year-old inmate died after being punched and kicked repeatedly. The cellmate who was charged with first-degree murder in that case had been charged three weeks earlier, along with two other inmates, in the beating death of a 44-year-old inmate in September.

A spokesperson for the province said the internal review may result in changes.

“This latest incident will be reviewed carefully with a view to discovering if any changes or improvements are needed,” the spokesperson wrote in an email. “The province works diligently to ensure the safety and security of everyone inside provincial correctional facilities.”

Kyle Ross, president of the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union, which represents correctional officers at the facility, said workers are dealing with difficult situations.

He said staffing can be an issue, and that the union works with the province to ensure concerns are addressed.

“Currently, with the amount of inmates in these facilities, it’s getting more and more challenging to do that work safely,” Ross said. “We have some vacancies that need to be filled. So, it’s a really challenging environment.”
