A man has been charged with assault with a weapon after a vehicle collided with a striking municipal worker on a picket line in the Rural Municipality of Tache Monday.

Mounties from the St. Pierre-Jolys detachment were called to the picket line at Road 52 North at about 1 p.m., where workers were blocking access to a municipal office, said RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Melanie Roussel.

Members of the Operating Engineers of Manitoba Local 987, who work at the RM’s waste management facilities and for its public works department, went on strike Monday morning.

The driver, who was trying to get to the municipal building, refused to stop at a checkpoint. The driver is accused of hitting a picketer at a slow speed and knocking him to the ground.

“He drove fast enough to push him on his back,” said Roussel.

The 54-year-old picketer from Oak Bluff approached the driver, who allegedly pushed him to the ground, RCMP said, before getting in his vehicle and leaving.

The victim suffered minor injuries, but did not need medical treatment.

Roussel said the incident is unusual.

She said, in her experience as an RCMP officer, picket lines and protests tend to remain calm.

“I’ve never seen that in my career,” she said. “Usually, it’s peaceful.”

Mounties said the accused, a 68-year-old man from the RM of Ste. Anne, was charged with assault and assault with a weapon. He was released ahead of a court date in Winnipeg.
