The Progressive Conservative MLA for Selkirk said he has no plan to seek re-election.

Richard Perchotte, who was elected in 2023, said on social media Thursday he decided not to run again because politics is not for him.

“While I am eager to continue to serve this great community, and though serving as your MLA has been a true privilege, after great reflection, numerous conversations with family and loved ones I have decided politics is not the best fit for me,” said Perchotte in a Facebook post.

“While I have great respect and regard for my PC colleagues —and I believe in the common sense conservative principles that bind us together — I feel, at this time, I am able to accomplish more as a private citizen and community member than as a member of Manitoba’s Official Opposition.”

Perchotte wrote that he’s grateful to his colleagues, staff and those who worked to help him get elected, as well as his family and friends.

“Sometimes in life we take big swings. Sometimes it works out. Sometimes it doesn’t. When it is done in the service of others it is always a worthwhile endeavour,” he said.

“Serving Selkirk and Manitobans has been one of the great honours of my life.”

Perchotte joins the ranks of three other Tories who said they don’t intend to run in the next election, which must be called by Oct. 5, 2027.

Veteran PC MLA Ron Schuler, who was first elected in 1999, announced in December he’s not going to seek his Springfield-Ritchot seat again. Schuler held two cabinet positions under PC premier Brian Pallister.

Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen, too, announced in December he would not run again, after what will be a 24-year career in the legislature.

Goertzen held several cabinet positions under Pallister and was interim premier for two months after Pallister resigned in 2021 and before Heather Stefanson was elected leader by PC party members.

Doyle Piwniuk, MLA for the Turtle Mountain constituency, announced in November he plans to exit political life. He was first elected in 2014 and served as transportation and infrastructure minister under Stefanson.
