Man faces charges

in racing incident

Speeding drivers were racing through Transcona at up to 200 km/h overnight, Winnipeg police say.

Around 2 a.m. July 26, police got reports of a Corvette and other vehicles racing along Disraeli Freeway. Using the Winnipeg Police Service’s helicopter, officers monitored the vehicles and recorded speeds, including vehicles crossing the Nairn overpass at up to 200 km/hr.

Officers with the central traffic unit tried to pull over a Jeep and a Corvette at Lagimodiere Avenue and Regent Avenue. The driver of the Corvette didn’t stop and sped past police, eventually stopping in the 100 block of Johnson Avenue, when the driver and passenger got out and ran.

The K9 unit tracked the suspects to the 100 block of Poplar Street. One of them was taken down by a police dog and received medical attention. Both were taken into custody.

A 20-year-old man is facing charges of fleeing from a police officer and dangerous driving. He was released on a court appearance notice and police didn’t release his name. The driver of the Jeep was ticketed.

The other vehicles were not identified.

Man accused of breaking into school

A 35-year-old man has been accused of breaking into six River Heights homes and a nearby high school on Saturday morning, causing damage estimated at $25,000.

At about 6:30 a.m. July 25, Winnipeg police got several 911 calls about an unknown man breaking into homes in the 100 block of Kingsway after throwing bricks and rocks through windows and glass doors. In some cases, a man confronted and threatened residents and stole their belongings, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Sunday.

One of the victims flagged down officers when police arrived on scene, pointing out a man walking down the street armed with a broken liquor bottle. The suspect dropped the bottle and police arrested him.

No one was injured.

Ralph Shane Knott, 35, was charged with five counts of breaking and entering into a dwelling with intent, two counts of breaking and entering into a place, one count of assault with a weapon, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and failure to comply with a condition of a release order.

Security guard

assaulted with knife

A 39-year-old woman has been charged after police say a retail theft attempt led to a knife being used against a security guard at a store on Portage Avenue.

Winnipeg police arrested the woman at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in connection with a robbery at a retail store in the 300 block of Portage Avenue.

Police said the woman entered the store shortly before 2 p.m. and attempted to steal merchandise before being confronted by store security. Police said the suspect then brandished a knife and assaulted a security guard.

Security was able to gain control of the suspect and police were contacted. The 24-year-old security guard suffered minor injuries and received medical treatment.

The woman has been charged with robbery, possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order. She was detained in custody.

Man charged, police recover loaded gun

A 19-year-old man has been charged after police recovered a loaded handgun during a foot chase in Winnipeg’s Lord Selkirk Park neighbourhood Friday night.

The Winnipeg Police Service said officers were patrolling the 400 block of King Street at about 8:45 p.m. on Friday when they saw a vehicle parked with its doors open and more than a dozen males gathered around it.

As officers approached the group, they recognized one of the men. Police said the man displayed characteristics of someone who may have been armed, prompting a weapons-related investigation.

During a safety search, police said the suspect ran from officers. After a brief foot chase, he was taken into custody and a loaded Glock handgun fell out of his waistband.

The 19-year-old has been charged with multiple firearm-related offences and resisting a peace officer. He was detained in custody.
