If you’re up early Sunday morning, some 600 runners could use a cheering section at the environment refuge Fort Whyte Alive.

Fort Whyte at 1961 McCreary Road, and the Running Room will host the 11th annual Hypothermic Half Marathon Sunday.

The forecast calls for an overnight low -30 C Saturday before it warms up to a brisk high under sunny skies of -22 C.

The half marathon typically draws several hundred runners, and since it’s attached to one of the city’s best known running stores, the runners are the ones who also take in races like the Boston Marathon.

The first wave takes off at 7:30 a.m. The first runners are expected to cross the finish line at about 9 a.m. The course closes at 12:30 p.m.

The race starts and ends at the Fort Whyte Alive and the course is laid out to take in the Assiniboine Forest and Assiniboine Park . Runners will warm up at Fort Whyte and sit down to a post-race brunch at the Buffalo Stone Café sponsored by cater, Diversity Food Services.

The marathon typically raises about $18,000 that the environmental area uses to run its public education programs.
