Environmentalists and local politicians gathered to celebrate what will become the CN100 Legacy Forest along Harte Trail near the Van Roon Prairie Garden.

The Canadian National Railway, which is celebrating its centennial this year, announced a $1-million donation to Trees Canada for the initiative. Volunteers with the Friends of Harte Trail will plant the shrubs.

The announcement comes one week after Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman unveiled a city-wide challenge for corporations, community organizations and city residents: to help plant one million trees before the city hits the corresponding population milestone around 2035.

Police charge teen girls with shoplifting alcohol

A handful of underage teenage girls have been charged with theft after the group stole bottles at a liquor store on Keewatin Street Wednesday night, police say.

Const. Rob Carver of the Winnipeg Police Service confirmed Saturday morning that officers responded to reports of shoplifting at Tyndall Market Liquor Mart on Wednesday night. Police have since arrested and charged five teenagers, ranging in age from 14 to 17, with theft under $5,000.

Carver said a video posted to Reddit Friday that shows at least half a dozen teens in hoodies shoving alcohol bottles into backpacks, appears to be the same incident.

Police said Saturday it is unclear how much product was stolen, but authorities recovered at least some of the product.
