Izzy enters hall of fame

Israel Idonije was inducted Tuesday into the Canada West Hall of Fame.

Originally from Lagos, Nigeria and raised in Brandon, Idonije starred on the gridiron for the U of M Bisons between 1998 and 2002.

To celebrate his induction, he will be in attendance on Saturday when he’s honoured with a special halftime presentation during the team’s game vs Calgary. 

Idonije played a decade in the NFL, spending nine seasons in Chicago (2004-2012) before finishing his playing career with Detroit in 2013.

QB Collaros gets first live reps at Bombers practice

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers got their first live look at newly acquired quarterback Zach Collaros at practice Tuesday.

Collaros was traded last week by the Toronto Argonauts to the Blue Bombers with a fifth-round draft pick in exchange for a third-rounder. 

"I feel really good," said Collaros, who has not played since being injured in Week 1 while he was a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. "I’ve felt good for a long time now but I haven’t taken any full-speed reps for quite some time."

Later this week, Winnipeg travels to Calgary for Saturday’s Week 19 battle against the Stampeders.

Part of Garry Street downtown to close Wednesday

The City of Winnipeg is advising motorists to avoid southbound Garry Street from York Avenue to Broadway during the day Wednesday. It will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for paving of the Broadway-Garry Street intersection, the city said in a press release.

Motorists in the area should allow additional travel time to get to their destinations and use alternate routes, the city said. For Winnipeg Transit re-route and schedule information, follow @transitalerts or contact 311.

Stolen vehicle rams police car

Three people are in custody after a stolen vehicle containing stolen goods, methamphetamine and a gun rammed a police car then tried to hit one of the officers Monday morning.

Police spotted the vehicle in the Exchange District at about 4:15 a.m. and followed it north over the Disraeli Freeway into a parking lot on the 100 block of Talbot Avenue, a police press release said.

Police attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle reversed and hit the cruiser, causing extensive damage to both vehicles. When police approached the suspects, the woman driving accelerated directly toward one of the officers, narrowly missing the officer. The suspects then crashed into a fence and their vehicle was disabled. They tried to flee on foot but were arrested after officers Tasered one of the suspects.
   
Inside the vehicle police said they found an improvised firing device, or zip gun, methamphetamine and stolen property related to an earlier residential break-in in East St. Paul.
   
Police charged the driver, Danielle Marlene Sanderson, 26, with several offences including assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, failing to comply with probation, possession of a stolen credit card and possessing property obtained by crime. Myles Junior Keewatincappo, 30, and Brenton Sean Paul Harper, 25, have also been charged with several offences.

Homicide ruled out in death of woman whose body was found in recycling depot

Police say the death of a woman whose body was found Sept. 28 at a Winnipeg recycling facility was not a homicide.

Police said an investigation determined that homicide was not 33-year-old Mary Madeline Yellowback’s cause of death. In a press release police did not specify how Yellowback died. Her body was located in the 100 block of Omands Creek Blvd.

Ice deal McGovern to Raiders

The Winnipeg Ice have traded the Western Hockey League rights to 19-year-old goaltender Duncan McGovern to the Prince Albert Raiders for an eighth-round bantam draft pick in 2022.

The 6-2 Winnipeg product played 24 games for the Ice in 2018-19, posting a 6-16-2-0 record and a 4.77 goals-against average. He had not played for the the club this season after being released during training camp.

Alice Cooper brings Ol’ Black Eyes tour to Winnipeg

Legendary Detroit rocker Alice Cooper is extending his 2019 Ol’ Black Eyes Is Back tour into 2020, bringing it to the Centennial Concert Hall on Saturday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m.

Cooper just released the Breadcrumbs EP, a tribute to the punk and rock scene of his hometown that includes covers of songs by Suzy Quatro, the MC5 and the Dirtbombs.

Tickets — ranging from $39 to $119 plus fees — go on sale at Livenation.com at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18. Lita Ford will open the show.

Herb Alpert, Celtic Illusion coming to the Burt

Iconic trumpeter Herb Alpert and his wife, Grammy-winning vocalist Lani Hall, are bringing their tour to the Burton Cummings Theatre on Tuesday, April 14, at 8 p.m.

Alpert, the co-founder of A&M Records, and Hall will perform classics from their Tijuana Brass and Brasil ’66 days, as well as standards from the likes of Cole Porter and the Beatles, and improv jazz tunes. The show features a video projection of historic moments and rare footage from their dual careers.

Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. at livenation.com. Prices range from $55 to $85 plus fees.

Also coming to the Burt next year is Australian dance show Celtic Illusion, a blend of Irish dance and magical illusions.

Led by choreographer and lead dancer Anthony Street — the first Australian to perform the lead role in Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance — Celtic Illusion features internationally acclaimed dancers, many of whom have performed with Riverdance and Lord of the Dance.

The show takes place Saturday, March 14; tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. at Ticketmaster.ca. Prices are TBA.
