Pionk calls Jets season ’embarrassing’

Winnipeg Jets defenceman Neal Pionk didn’t pull any punches Tuesday when asked to assess the season for himself and his team.

"Let’s be honest, it was kind of embarrassing what we did this year. We had a really good roster and totally underachieved," Pionk told reporters following his team’s practice at Canada Life Centre.

Winnipeg (36-32-11) will miss the playoffs this year for the seventh time in 11 years since the NHL returned to the city. They have three games left this week, all on home ice, including a Wednesday date with Philadelphia.

"When I look in the mirror, I’m embarrassed," said Pionk. "I don’t think I played as best as I could all year. That’s where it starts for me. I think if everyone goes into the summer and does that self-evaluation and we all come back, it’ll be a lot better."
