SIXTY women and their achievements will be celebrated at a May 6 gala to name Winnipeg’s 2009 Women of Distinction.
The YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg announced the 60 nominees in the categories of: young woman of distinction, health and wellness, business and the professions, arts and culture, education and training, research and innovation, community voluntarism, sport and recreation, and creative communications.
“Once again, we are humbled with the outstanding group of women who have been nominated for a 2009 Women of Distinction Award,” said Patricia Flaws, chairwoman of the awards committee.
The 33rd annual awards dinner will be held May 6 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. University of Winnipeg’s Jennifer Rattray, strategic initiatives development director, will be master of ceremonies.
Tickets are $125 and available at any Winnipeg YMCA-YWCA branches, online at www.ywinnipeg.ca and at 204-831-2974.
Proceeds from the dinner will go to support YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg women’s and girls’ programs and community initiatives including Make Waves, an instructor-led, gentle aquatic program designed for women recovering from breast cancer surgery; Canada’s Week without Violence, a nation-wide initiative to build safer neighbourhoods across Canada; and Y Neighbours, a social and support group for women.
