Two Manitoba-based video journalists received an international nod for their impressive work this week.

Wednesday, Melissa Tait of the Free Press and Tim Smith of the Brandon Sun earned an honourable mention by the National Press Photographers Association, as a part of its ‘Best of Photojournalism: 2015’ awards.

The awards are regularly handed out to esteemed outlets like the Washington Post, The New York Times and Reuters for their visual work.

Tait and Smith earned praise in the Feature Multimedia Story category for their series Testing Positive, a work detailing the life and emotions of Cheryl Mauthe and her family as they dealt with two different cancers.

Smith followed the family for about year, documenting the ordeal as Mauthe endured surgery and chemo for breast cancer while offering support for her 8-year-old son Colin, who was battling leukemia. Smith took the photos and video; Tait edited the video.

The story first ran in the Brandon Sun in August 2014.

“Being held up to the same degree as institutions like the Washington Post, NPR and the L.A. Times is just more proof of what I preach every day,” offered Mike Aporius, director of photography/multimedia at the Free Press. “We have great talent at both the Free Press and the Brandon Sun. Tim’s ability to get such intimate access to stories and Melissa’s amazing way of bringing it all together is a pairing I hope to match up again for future projects.”

Tait was blown away by the NPPA mention.

“I’m proud that our hard work is being recognized by NPPA,” she said Thursday. “Tim spent nearly a year with the family, documenting both pain and happiness with his incredible photos and video. It was an honour to help shape his work into this documentary feature.”
