OTTAWA – Former Conservative MP Inky Mark will be on the ballot in Dauphin in the next election but not for the Conservatives.
Mark, who left politics in 2010, plans to run as an independent, spurred on by support from his former constituents who he says continued to phone, email or visit him in person.
“I am encouraged by the show of support from the people of this riding,” said Mark in a statement.
Mark has been highly critical of his former party in the last four years, particularly of the lack of willingness of backbenchers to speak out against their own party, and of nomination processes.
Mark’s entry into the race might shake up what would have been an otherwise boring contest. Robert Sopuck is currently the MP for Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette and won with 63 per cent of the vote in 2011.
The NDP finished a distance second while the Liberals, with just six per cent of the vote, barely were even noticed. Sopuck is nominated for the Conservatives to run again. The Liberals will field retired RCMP officer Ray Piche.
