NDP leadership candidate Theresa Oswald promised to fund free in-school tutoring for subjects like reading and math, and double funding for school breakfast and nutrition programs if she becomes premier.
She also vowed to continue to reduce class sizes and expand such successful targeted education models as the Aboriginal Head Start program.
In a campaign announcement this afternoon at the Millennium Library, Oswald said her ‘quality classroom initiative’ would cost about $5-million annually.
She also promised to continue to increase funding for schools at the rate of economic growth. That would cost about $25 million in the next school year, she said.
Earlier this morning, Oswald dropped by the Free Press News Café for a live Q & A.
Oswald discussed her decision to challenge Premier Greg Selinger for the leadership of her party during the 30 minute chat with Free Press political columnist Dan Lett.
Fellow challenger Steve Ashton is expected to appear at the News Café next week. Selinger has yet to confirm a date for his appearance.
