Winnipeg native Michelle Stilwell is shining on another podium.
A Paralympian gold-medallist wheelchair racer who holds both world and Paralympic records, Stilwell is now an elected government official.
Stilwell, who lives in Parksville, B.C., is the MLA for the Parksville-Qualicum constituency after winning the seat in the provincial election on Tuesday night. She was declared the winner about 90 minutes after the polls closed beating out the NDP’s Barry Avis and David Coupland of the Conservatives.
In a story in the Nanaimo Daily News, Stilwell promised to give her constituents honest representation.
“For the people that voted for me, they will have someone who will work very hard for them, who is dedicated and committed to hard work,” Stilwell, 38, said.
She is the only female Paralympic wheelchair athlete to win gold in two separate summer sport events. She won gold in wheelchair basketball at Sydney in 2000 and in wheelchair racing, won double gold at Beijing in 2008 and gold at London in 2012.
She is the IPC world record holder in the women’s T52 classification at 100m (18.67), 200m (33.19) & 400m (1:05.41) and holds the Paralympics record in the 200m (33.80).
