The Manitoba government will contribute $1 million for a new state-of-the-art sports field at Dakota Collegiate, Education and Advanced Learning Minister James Allum announced today.

“The provincial government is pleased to support the Dakota Field of Dreams project, which will create new and exciting outdoor sports and recreational opportunities for the school and community,” Allum said in a news release.

Dakota Collegiate Alumni have been fundraising since 2013 to reach a total goal of $5.1 million. The project will include an artificial turf field, 400-metre rubber track, cricket cage, spectator stands, scoreboard, press box and new parking and drop-off lane.

Dakota Collegiate has been forced to play its varsity sports off-campus, and phys ed activities have been limited by the school’s sports field having been used as a dump for construction waste.

“This investment reflects the Manitoba government’s commitment to invest in our province in a meaningful way,” said alumni president Les Wiens. “Quality facilities promote physical activity and active living, and better health naturally follows. We appreciate this support for our project.”

Other recent provincially funded projects at the school include a heating and ventilation system upgrade, new science room and roof replacement.

The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2017, Allum said.
