Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 23/07/2022 (1290 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
We all likely know someone who has received a letter in the mail advising that their medical test has been scheduled for several months into the future. Maybe a year. Maybe longer. Maybe it was postponed for an even later date. For surgeries for non-life threatening conditions, the story is similar. People wait. The problem has been developing for years; COVID-19 made matters much worse as hospitals everywhere re-organized to treat an influx of critically ill people.
As our community emerges from the most challenging phases of COVI D-19, Health Sciences Centre and the Health Sciences Centre Foundation have launched Operation Excellence, a six-year, $100 million initiative to help address the wait lists and revitalize and refocus HSC-Manitoba’s hospital-as a surgical centre of excellence and innovation.
Manitobans are engaged, motivated, and eager to shape a resilient future for HSC.
The plan, which started to take shape before the pandemic, is designed in three stages in order to minimize disruption at the hospital while construction moves ahead. The plan centres around the redevelopment of spaces at the hospital, the implementation of leading edge wait list management and surgical referral software systems, and perhaps most important, the acquisition of a significant amount of new equipment so that our skilled surgeons can perform far more minimally invasive surgeries. Minimally invasive surgeries are procedures that only require small incisions through which our surgeons use high-end scopes and instruments instead of performing conventional open surgery, whenever possible. Minimally invasive surgeries lead to better outcomes, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recoveries-and all of which lead to increased hospital capacity.
By the end of Operation Excellence, HSC will have eight new operating rooms, a far greater number of private patient rooms, an expanded Emergency Department, a new outpatient imaging facility (equipped with the most modern diagnostic equipment available), and many more enhancements.
Operation Excellence is bold, ambitious, and the right plan to provide Manitobans with the health care we all deserve.
Operation Excellence is also the largest fundraising campaign in the history of the HSC Foundation. When we launched publicly in June 2022, we announced that we had already raised $75 million of the $100 million the plan requires. The Province of Manitoba stepped forward with a contribution of $50 million, and several donors rallied enthusiastically to contribute $25 million even before the campaign was public. Since the launch, we have been receiving gifts and fielding excellent questions about the initiative.
Manitobans are engaged, motivated, and eager to shape a resilient future for HSC. And we are grateful.
