With Roxy Lanes set to close Saturday, city councillors are considering steps to keep the 93-year-old East Kildonan building intact.
A new motion calls for the city director of planning, property and development to consider nominating the 385 Henderson Hwy. structure to Winnipeg’s list of historical resources. If it is added, the building would be protected against demolition.
The motion from Elmwood-East Kildonan Coun. Jason Schreyer notes the building opened as the Roxy Theatre in 1929, before being converted into the bowling alley in 1960.
“The city has received concerns from stakeholders that there is a desire to have the building formally protected and preserved,” the motion states.
The East Kildonan-Transcona community committee voted in favour of the motion Monday, which would also require approval from council’s property and development committee.
If the director does nominate the structure for a heritage designation, the Elmwood neighbourhood building will be assessed in a report and require further votes at city hall.
