A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a suspect in the death of a man found last year in the Red River.

The body of Mohamed Mohiadin Ahmed, 29, was discovered Oct. 12 in the area of Churchill Drive and Hay Street. The Winnipeg Police Service homicide unit asked the public for any information on Ahmed’s death the next day.

The next public update on the case came Tuesday, when police announced a Canada-wide warrant had been issued for 28-year-old Jesse James Daher on second-degree murder charges.

WINNIPEG POLICE SERVICE Winnipeg police announced a Canada-wide warrant for 28-year-old Jesse James Daher on second-degree murder charges in connection to the Oct. 12 slaying of Mohammed Mohiadin Ahmed, 29.

WPS public information officer Const. Dani McKinnon said investigators believe Daher is “possibly” still in Winnipeg.

“(The warrant is) really just to cover all bases,” she said. “It’s very important to understand that a charge such as murder is very serious and we can’t limit it only to our province.”

Police provided few details on the homicide: Ahmed and Daher reportedly knew each other, and the body was not in the Red River for a long period of time before it was discovered.

Daher is known to city police. In February 2018, he was arrested after a break-and-enter at an Ellice Avenue apartment building. Daher was charged with multiple firearm counts, four counts of failure to comply conditions set by a judge, and was processed on five outstanding warrant arrests when he was remanded in custody.

“We would like to have somebody arrested sooner than later, that would be an ideal situation,” McKinnon said Tuesday. “In this case, we are asking for the public’s assistance, so it has taken a little bit more time.”

Daher is considered dangerous and should not be approached. Anyone with information is asked to call 911, or the homicide unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
