A fatal hit-and-run case involving a Winnipeg police officer charged with drunk driving made its first court appearance Wednesday.

Const. Justin Holz, a 34-year-old eight-year member of the Winnipeg Police Service, did not appear in person and his case was simply adjourned until next month as lawyers continue their discussions.

Holz is charged with impaired driving causing death and failing to stop at the scene of an accident in the death of 23-year-old Cody Severight. He is being represented by defence lawyer Josh Weinstein.

Severight died after he was hit by a car on Oct. 3 at about 8 p.m. while walking in the area of Main Street and Sutherland Avenue near the Sutherland Hotel.

Holz was arrested about seven kilometres away — in the area of Main Street and Red River Boulevard — a half-hour later. He was in his personal vehicle.
