A major fundraising campaign in support of the Health Sciences Centre Children’s Hospital and pediatric medical research is nearing its ambitious $75-million goal.

The Children’s Hospital Foundations of Manitoba’s five-year Better Futures fundraising campaign celebrated its official launch Wednesday at True North Square with about $52 million already in hand.

“Manitobans are incredibly generous when they know there is a need,” foundation president Stefano Grande said in a release.

“We have seen this firsthand with donors supporting the new Travis Price Children’s Heart Centre and the new Child & Adolescent Mental Health outdoor play space, both part of the $75-million Better Futures campaign, and funded almost entirely while donors had the added pressures of COVID-19 to manage.”

The campaign began in 2019 and achieved 70 per cent of its target in the first three years. Another $23 million is needed to reach its goal.

“Now, we are inviting the whole community to make a difference for the thousands of kids who urgently need safe, culturally sensitive hospital care each year,” Grande said.

On Wednesday, children and families, donors and community members gathered in downtown Winnipeg to mark the fundraising milestone and campaign launch.

Entertainment was provided by the Ecole Seven Oaks Incredibows, choirs from Strathcona School and Isaac Brock School Ojibwa bilingual program, and the Spirit Horse Drum Group from Long Plain First Nation.

The campaign will enhance critical infrastructure and facilities to the tune of $45 million, including upgrades to the emergency department; provide $25 million to support pediatric research through the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba; and fund programming at the hospital, including an Indigenous community healing space and mental health place spaces.

“As the only hospital in Manitoba with specialized, acute pediatric services, and the largest child-focused health research centre on the prairies, nearly every family in the province is touched by the excellence in care, education, and research at HSC Children’s and CHRIM,” campaign co-chair Kirsten McConnell said.
