BRANDON — Assiniboine Community College will add two rural rotating sites to its licensed practical nursing program for the 2022-23 academic year.

Otterburne and Morden, which are part of Southern Health, will get 25 nursing seats each, college president Mark Frison said Wednesday.

While the Otterburne site will make use of facilities at Providence University College starting in September, the Morden program is scheduled to begin in a vacant facility in January 2023.

College officials revealed earlier this year that a rural rotating site would be established in Arborg in September.

Frison said a fourth rural site will be announced and would be in the Prairie Mountain Health region.

“This is a great opportunity to continue to expand our training to this part of the province,” Frison said.

“Rural rotating nursing sites are essential to ensuring there are enough trained nurses to keep up with demand in all regions of the province.”

Advanced Education Minister Jon Reyes referred to the government’s pledge to use $19.5 million to add 259 nursing seats to five post-secondary institutions across the province this year, with a multi-year plan to add around 400 seats overall.

“We all know that the nursing shortage crisis is not just a Manitoba thing, but it’s actually a global thing,” Reyes said.

“We’ll do everything that we can here in the province of Manitoba to attract more nurses and expand seats that benefit post-secondary students such as those at Assiniboine Community College.”

In addition to these new rural rotating sites, which are set up temporarily, college officials also facilitate nursing programs through permanent locations in Brandon, Dauphin, Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie.

This year, the capacity of the Portage nursing site grew to 35 spots from 25, which was due to increased provincial funding.

“Nursing is actually our largest single program here at the institution,” Frison said. “The expansion that’s been financed by the government actually represents a 30 per cent increase in the number of nursing seats that we have.”

ACC will accept applications for the Otterburne and Morden sites until May 23.

Only residents of the Southern Health region will be considered for the Otterburne site, while the Morden site will give priority to those who reside within 150 kilometres.
