A political attempt to stop the sale of the John Blumberg Golf Course has been raised at Winnipeg city hall.

In a new motion, Coun. Kevin Klein (Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood) calls for the city to rescind a 2013 decision to declare the property at 4540 Portage Ave. surplus, which would no longer allow it to be sold.

Klein’s motion argues the city should keep the land instead, because council recently voted to increase green space by 1,000 acres, creating a need to preserve existing outdoor spaces. It also notes some residents "have shown great concern" about the sale.

Hundreds of Winnipeggers have signed a petition to oppose the sale of the Headingley course, arguing it is needed and well-used.

The city has issued a request for proposals for options to sell the property or enter into a joint venture. A report on those options is due back later this year.

Klein’s motion will be heard at the Oct. 27 meeting of the Assiniboia community committee.
