Donations gathered for fire victims

A relief fund has been set up for residents who were displaced by a fire on New Year’s Eve.

Ten residents of the apartment block in the 400 block of Sherbrook Street were involved in Turning Leaf Support Services’ programs, and the non-profit organization has set up an online relief fund to collect donations.

The organization runs crisis intervention and treatment programs for people who have mental illness or intellectual disabilities.

In an Instagram post Monday, Turning Leaf asked the public for help, saying donations will be used to buy winter clothes, food, toiletries and household items for residents who were displaced.

“Thankfully, everyone is safe and nobody was hurt, but these 10 vulnerable people have lost everything but the clothes on their backs. We are asking for your monetary support in the form of a donation to our Sherbrook Fire Relief Fund. Every dollar you can manage to give will go to providing emergency necessities and helping get these folks back on their feet,” the post stated.

No representative from Turning Leaf responded to a request for comment Monday.

The fire started in the three-storey apartment building around 8:18 p.m. Dec. 31, and the water used to fight the flames caused slippery conditions in the extreme cold, resulting in the area being closed to traffic for days.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been released.
