Some government offices will remain closed Monday and Tuesday to compensate for Christmas and Boxing Day falling on the weekend.
But there will be plenty of outdoor recreational facilities open throughout the holidays.
The big news for Boxing Day shoppers is that stores will be allowed to open extended hours Dec. 26 — even though that falls on a Sunday.
The province passed legislation on the last day of the session that suspends the restrictive Sunday shopping rules — for those communities, including Winnipeg, that have Sunday shopping bylaws — and will allow retailers to keep whatever hours they want on Boxing Day.
Municipalities that want to restrict shopping hours on Dec. 26 this year must have passed a bylaw.
All Winnipeg civic offices, including city hall and public libraries will be closed Monday and Tuesday. Civic pools remain closed over the weekend. City hall advises people to contact 311 to find out specific pool hours for Monday and Tuesday.
Provincial government offices will also be closed Monday and Tuesday but will keep regular hours today.
The Free Press is not publishing on Christmas Day. However, a special Boxing Day edition of the Weekend paper — complete with all of the regular Saturday features — will be published on Boxing Day and delivered to all home subscribers. That Boxing Day Weekend paper will also be available for purchase at stores and at our vending boxes.
The Y will be closed Christmas; closing early New Year’s Eve; and holiday hours, 7 a.m.-8 p.m. on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
All Liquor Marts will remain closed on Saturday, Christmas Day, but are open noon-6 p.m. on Sunday. All MLCC outlets will keep regular hours Dec. 27-30, close at 6 p.m. Dec. 31 and remain closed New Year’s Day, but are open noon-6 p.m. Jan. 2.
The McPhillips Street Station Casino and Club Regent Casino are closed Christmas Day, but reopen at noon on Boxing Day and regular hours for the rest of the week.
All of the City of Winnipeg’s outdoor skating, tobogganing and cross-country ski facilities will be open Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
The restaurant at Harbourview Recreation Complex will be closed Christmas but open Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Brady Road Landfill: Closed Christmas Day and New Year’s; No other changes to regular hours during the holidays.
Winnipeg Transit: Sunday schedule for Christmas and New Year’s.
The following routes will not operate Dec. 24 to Jan. 3:
Route 25 Ness Super Express;
Route 41 Henderson/Glenway Express;
Route 46 Transcona Express.
Recycling/Garbage Collection: No garbage collection Dec. 27, Dec. 28 and Jan. 3. The Garbage schedule resumes Wednesday Dec. 29 as Day 1.
