A fire that forced residents from an apartment building on Chestnut Street early this morning started outside, fire officials says.
Crews were called to the building at 240 Chestnut St. at 2:55 a.m. after a blaze that started at the rear of the building spread inside through an open window.
The building was evacuated, and residents took shelter in an emergency response vehicle until one or more Winnipeg Transit buses arrived.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimate was available Wednesday morning.
