A vacant apartment building on Maryland Street will be torn down after it was gutted by fire Wednesday night.
Firefighters were sent to the four-storey buiding at 426 Maryland St. shortly after 7:45 p.m. and found smoke pouring from the building, which had already been damaged in two fires in January 2019.
Fire crews used aerial ladder trucks to battle the blaze and had it under control by 1:25 a.m. No one was injured.
Six people and a dog were evacuated from two nearby homes, and Winnipeg Transit provided buses as temporary shelter, the City of Winnipeg said in a news release.
Firefighters left the scene late Thursday morning, but Maryland Street will remain shut down between Ellice and St. Matthews avenues while the building is demolished.
The area will remain closed off during the evening rush hour. Once the road re-opens, drivers are advised to use caution because water used to fight the fire has frozen on the street. The City of Winnipeg said it is monitoring the area and using sand and de-icing agents as required.
Manitoba Hydro is working to fix power lines affected by the incident and estimated they will be done by 2 p.m.
