It was a busy end to the weekend for the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. Crews fought four residential fires Sunday night and Monday morning.

Firefighters quickly extinguished a deck fire in the 600 block of Harbison Avenue E. shortly after 8 a.m. today. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was deemed to be careless disposal of a cigarette butt, the City of Winnipeg said in a news release.

An errant cigarette butt was also deemed to be the cause of a fire at a home in the 100 block of Disraeli Street. The one-and-a-half storey house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived shortly after 3:30 a.m. today. Five occupants of the home escaped through a window and were assessed by paramedics on the scene. No injuries were reported.

A fire watch was placed on the house, and crews returned to the address shortly before 6:30 a.m. after a bystander called 911 to report smoke coming from the residence. Crews extinguished the smouldering hot spots.

The WFPS said cigarettes should be extinguished in an ashtray or metal container filled with sand or water. They should not be put in trash cans or plant pots. Potting soil includes combustible material such as peat moss and shredded wood.

Firefighters were sent to the scene of a fire in a duplex in the 300 block of Alfred Avenue at 1:50 a.m. today and got it under control in about 25 minutes. They returned to the building after 4 a.m. to douse hot spots that had reignited.

A home in the 600 block of Agnes Avenue may be a complete loss after a Sunday night fire that took crews nearly an hour to extinguish. WFPS arrived at the scene shortly after 11:20 p.m. and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. There were no reports of injuries. The cause of the fires on Alfred and Agnes avenues are under investigation.
