A former RCMP officer accused of having an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl he met while on duty has taken responsibility in court.

The man, who is not being named to protect the identity of the victim, was charged with sexual exploitation in September 2016, four months after he resigned from the force. He pleaded guilty during a brief court appearance this week, represented by defence lawyer Hymie Weinstein, and is set to be sentenced in the new year.

He admitted to an amended charge, in which he accepted he was in a position of trust, but not a position of authority, over the victim.

The six-year member of the RCMP in Winnipeg was 31 when he met the underage girl during the course of his duties and pursued a sexual relationship with her from April to August 2014.

“He was working in an official capacity. He met her under legitimate circumstances. But certainly based on our investigation… it’s alleged that he took this relationship to a level it should have never gone to,” Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Jason Michalyshen told the Free Press after the charge was laid last year.

Details of the offence have not been provided in court.
