MANITOBA Tory MPs were split on a vote to ban conversion therapy.
MPs passed Bill C-6 in a 263-63 vote.
If passed by the Senate, the bill would ban anyone from helping a minor to attend classes or counselling to change their sexual orientation or gender identity, or compelling an adult to do so.
The Liberals introduced the measure in March 2020, and have widely publicized opposition from social-conservative MPs ahead of an anticipated election.
Three Manitoba Conservatives supported the bill: Raquel Dancho (Kildonan-St. Paul), Larry Maguire (Brandon-Souris) and Marty Morantz (Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley).
Four voted against the legislation: Candice Bergen (Portage-Lisgar), James Bezan (Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman), Ted Falk, (Provencher), and Dan Mazier (Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa).
Sixty-two of the 119 Conservative MPs voted against the bill.
In a statement, the Tories noted the Liberals had refused an amendment that would have clarified that the bill targets coercive practices but not religious advice.
“Conservatives have been clear in our opposition to conversion therapy and attempts to forcibly change a person’s sexual orientation,” wrote Conservative justice critic Rob Moore.
