Quick-thinking by security guards at Polo Park shopping centre led to the arrest of two suspects allegedly carrying loaded pistols Wednesday.

At about 2 p.m., city police were called to the Portage Avenue mall after reports of two men threatening security guards and shoppers. Police said suspects also robbed three people in a car outside the mall at gunpoint, making off with cash.

On Thursday, police said the suspects had been “displaying unusual behaviour” in the mall that concerned store staff. Security guards asked the two men to leave before being threatened, police said.

The guards called 911 and directed officers to the pair, who tried to flee on foot.

Police said one suspect ditched a loaded handgun while on the run, before being arrested on the 1500 block of St. Matthews Avenue. A loaded 9-mm handgun with a 30-round magazine and a tampered serial number were found by police.

Officers arrested another suspect near St. Matthews Avenue and Milt Stegall Drive. Police seized a loaded 9-mm pistol.

Sampson Paul Pistun, 20, and Trend Redhead, 20, of Winnipeg are both charged with three counts of armed robbery using a restricted or prohibited firearm, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and multiple firearms offences. Both were detained in custody.
