A roaring grass fire that closed a section of the Trans-Canada Highway in east Winnipeg spread to a business that specializes in portable trailers.

Fermor Avenue, which is part of the Trans-Canada, was closed from Symington Road to Navin Road for most of Sunday afternoon because of the fire, which was fanned by winds gusting up to 70 km/h. The road was reopened about 6 p.m.

Flames could be seen rising from one of the trailers at Industrial Trailer Sales on Fermor.

Winnipeg fire crews were called in to battle the blaze and were bolstered by firefighters from the municipalities of Springfield and St. Clements.

Crews were trying to prevent the flames from spreading to residential areas.

Earlier Sunday, the city issued a ban on open-air burn permits in order to limit the spread of the fire.
