MANITOBA Hydro may not have final approval to begin building a hydro line to Minnesota, but it has a tentative date to begin.

Hydro spokesman Scott Powell said construction on the $453-million Manitoba-Minnesota Transmission Project will begin on Aug. 19, subject to the utility getting final approval from the National Energy Board (NEB).

But Powell said if the utility doesn’t get the approval before Aug. 19, or if the NEB asks for more information, construction will not begin.

“We won’t be doing anything until we get NEB approval,” Powell said on Wednesday.

“We’re letting people know the potential construction date.”

The federal government gave approval on June 14, conditional on working with affected Indigenous communities, but since then Sagkeeng First Nation, which filed last year for a judicial review to set aside the province’s environmental approval of the project, has filed an amendment and hopes to be before the courts by the end of the year.

Hydro wants electrical power to begin flowing to Minnesota by June 2020.
