The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a woman alleges she was assaulted by Winnipeg police officers.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said Wednesday that officers were called to a lounge after getting a call about a fight there early Monday.

The IIU said that while at the lounge, a 29-year-old woman was arrested for breaching a court order.

While the woman was in custody she began having health issues and was taken to the Health Sciences Centre. The woman alleged, on her way to hospital, that the officers had assaulted her.

The IIU said it was immediately notified about the incident and the IIU’s civilian director determined it was in the public interest to investigate.
