The province called an inquest Thursday into the death of an inmate early this year at Stony Mountain Institution.

Lewis Sitar, 50, had a month or two left to serve on a 2 1/2-year sentence for theft, uttering threats and other charges when was found in his cell unresponsive and suffering seizures on Feb. 21.

Emergency crews took him to Health Sciences Centre, but doctors couldn’t revive him and Sitar died days later, on March 3.

The Correctional Service of Canada, which oversees federal prisons, was called in to investigate the death. After that, the case went quiet until the province’s announcement.

Manitoba’s Fatality Inquiries Act calls for mandatory inquests when they involve violent, negligent, unexpected or unexplained deaths in prisons and psychiatric facilities.

The province said it hopes the inquest can determine the cause of Sitar’s death and prevent such deaths in the future. No date for the inquest has been set.
