The acting chief medical examiner for Manitoba has called an inquest into the death of Russell Andrew Spence.

The 31-year-old Winnipeg man died more than a year ago on Oct. 12 after a struggle with guards at the Remand Centre. He had just undergone intake into the centre after being arrested by Winnipeg police. Five minutes after the struggle began, Spence became unresponsive. Efforts to resuscitate him first at the scene and then later at Health Sciences Centre were unsuccessful.

An inquest will dig further into the circumstances of the man’s death, as well as investigate any necessary ways to prevent similar deaths moving forward.
