An incident involving a teenage girl who suffered a broken collarbone during her arrest is under the scrutiny of the province’s police watchdog.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba was called in after the 14-year old was treated for a fracture to her left collarbone and released from hospital.

The arrest took place on Sept. 2, when Winnipeg police were dispatched to investigate reports of a stolen vehicle. They located the vehicle, and when a girl took off on foot, an officer gave chase.

According to the police report filed with the agency, the foot pursuit ended when an officer caught up to the girl and pushed her from behind, causing her to fall.

The teen complained of shoulder pain following her arrest and was taken to Children’s Hospital where doctors found the fracture.

“Although this is not a serious injury as defined by regulations, the IIU civilian director determined it to be in the public interest for the agency to investigate,” the statement said.

No further details are expected to be made public while the investigation is ongoing.

The IIU also announced Wednesday it is investigating an allegation of domestic assault by an RCMP officer.

The incident is alleged to have taken place Aug. 31 between the male officer and a relative, and was reported by a third party.

Although there is no allegation of injury, the IIU civilian director determined it is in the public interest for the agency to investigate.

The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
